So when we were planning this blog post we knew we wanted to share this love story but were not entirely sure how to word it.. we had asked Carolyn first of all for her permission, then also for her version of it. This is a heart wrenching love story, bust out the kleenex box you are in for a treat! We would like to thank Eric and Carolyn for having us be a part of their special day. This was one of the most beautiful ceremonies we have ever seen!
In May of 2010, my best friend and Eric’s wife of 14 years, Pamela, was diagnosed with leukemia. She courageously fought her disease, but passed away on February 9, 2011, leaving a husband, three children and many dear friends and family. Swept up in the grief and shock of our tremendous loss, Eric and I found a new depth in the friendship we had shared for many, many years. Our families have been close for the longest time (Eric’s dad was my father’s best man in my parents’ wedding in 1982). Despite the 11 years between us, there was the same compassion and understanding that our families have shared over the years. In the fall of 2011, we began to casually spend time together, simply as a way to connect and identify with each other’s loss. This time of friendship was so special as the purpose was simply that, friendship in a time of sorrow.
Over time this grew, and eventually Eric realized that our relationship was at a critical turning point. True to his direct nature, he laid his heart at my feet and confessed that he was beginning to fall in love with me, and wanted to know if I would consider a life with him, Emily, Alicia and Vicenté. He had already purchased a new home in Kelowna, and was moving away from Prince George in March 2012. Knowing the enormity of this decision I faced, I spent days praying before giving him my answer. This was playing for keeps. There were four hearts and lives that would be impacted by my decision. I believe God spoke to my heart during that time, assuring me that ‘this is the time to love and be loved.’ After losing my best and dearest friend I had almost lost faith that anything good could ever be again in my life. This was God’s answer to what I had struggled and battled with in my mind and my heart after losing Pamela. So, I went to Eric and told him ‘yes, with all of my heart, I’m in!’ Emily, Alicia and Vicenté embraced our relationship openly. These kids are so precious and I am blessed to have known them so closely from birth.
Their move to Kelowna happened in March 2012 and we continued our relationship with many visits between Prince George and Kelowna over the ensuing months. In May 2012 Eric proposed, and I accepted! Almost a year later, we became husband and wife on May 4th, 2013, and I am now finally home, with the love of my life, and Emily, Alicia and Vicenté who are continually making this adventure a thrilling one!
